TURN OUT THE LIGHTS
Sing it Willie ~ "Turn Out the Lights ~ the Party's Over". Willie Nelson's country song couldn't have been truer that yesterday afternoon.
About 4:30 PM our oven dinner of crusted pork chops and sweet potatoes were just beginning to cook for dinner at 5 PM. When all of a sudden the black clouds that had been threatening all day broke loose. Cracks of lighting, booms of thunder and then "power out".
This has happened before so I expected the lights and oven to come back on momentarily. It was not to be. The lighting hit a power pole and about 6 blocks around us were out of power.
At 4:30 PM I wasn't too worried, lights should be back on soon. Well by 6:30 PM half cooked pork chops, hard sweet potatoes and no power, we started scrambling for candles and my oil lamp.
Since there was no way to complete the oven dinner. Don had a sandwich, and I opted for a healthy scone (haha) Wanted a cup of coffee...sorry no power.
We listened to the Dodger/Angel baseball game on our headsets with our "battery radios" and I knitted by candlelight. Felt just like a pioneer woman. Went to bed at 10:30 and at 1:30...the lights came on!!!
Once again...I had to stop and remember to be thankful for the little things we take for granted each and every day.

DRESSED FOR FALL
When we were up North celebrating my sister's 91st birthday, we found a cute little dress shop, and I found a couple of Fall dresses. ...

This Week: We'll be working on our fifth - of six - weekly color palettes. It's pretty, preppy, and I hope you'll agree...

We really take so much for granted don't we?
ReplyDeleteWhen my microwave was out of commission I almost forgot how to cook without it...I'm such a creature of habit.
Glad your power was finally restored. I think you would make a terrific pioneer woman!
Don tried to take a picture..but with the flash you couldn't tell we were in the dark. HaHa I walked to the microwave twice...Hello...it takes power too.
DeleteSounds like you both made the best out of the situation. It is amazing how we take electricity, water, etc. for granted.
ReplyDeleteIt is very hard for me to skip my coffee!!!
Missing the coffee was the hardest part. I took care of that this morning with a BIG cup.
DeleteIt is very annoying, isn't it Martha....
ReplyDeleteWe take everything for granted...oh well!
Knitting? I want to see that, please!
And the blooms on your "rock" plant...
Those white flowers look like Phlox to me.....
Enjoy your evening...
Cheers!
Linda :o)
Who me? Yes! It is annoying. I'll agree with anything if there are cookies to go with it.

Linda, it's rather amazing how much light an oil lamp puts out. The knitting is simple, I'm finishing up a dish cloth.
DeleteCan't wait to share the "rock" bloom.
Ooooops!
DeleteI meant Wanda of course ♥️
Getting old!
It's amazing how we become so accustomed, isn't it? I forget and walk around trying to flip light switches or try to use the microwave! We lost power for 5 hours last month and after one hour we just all went to bed since it was late evening anyway. We hadn't done that in a very long time and we had trouble finding matches and candles in the darkness! haha.
ReplyDeleteHad it been later than 4:30..I would have been in the bed too.
DeleteI'm going to find another oil lamp.. It really put out a lot of light. (And another bottle of lamp oil)
Were you able to salvage your pork chops for another meal? When my power goes out, I cook on the wood stove. Maybe you could have skewered those chops on a stick and cooked them over the oil lamp. Just like camping. Oh, the memories!

Because I thought the power would come back on, I didn't take them out of the oven right away, and when I did...they didn't look very appetizing. So I think it's a loss. The sweet potato I had sliced thin...so a few of them were eatable. Cooking over a oil lamp.....Bummer, if I had the computer..I could have looked up recipes for the oil lamp. HaHa.
DeleteIf you had known maybe you could have built a campfire in the backyard. Although I suppose that is not permissible.
DeletePS. I love your oil lamp.
I love lantern light, I love storms but not scary storms, . Glad you;re ok, too bad about super,
ReplyDeleteCan you believe the sun ha shined all day!!!
DeleteIsn't that the truth! We usually get our power on pretty quick. For some reason up at the lake it can take days. Not a good thing but folks survive!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
We do get spoiled, don't we. A few hours is not like a few days! Wow.
DeletePretty photo! It sounds like it was a nice evening, though I hope you were able to save your pork chops. xoxo
ReplyDeleteNo... waited too long in a warm oven. Actually the evening, was rather quiet and candlelight is soothing.
DeleteWanda, did you find yourself trying to do everything that requires electricity? I think the worst is that it is always unexpected - like when dinner is cooking! If I knew when we would lose power, I could plan for it! Haha
ReplyDeleteIt was hilarious, as I would think of Plan B...and then realize that plan needed power too. Then Plan C....finally just sat down and enjoyed the quiet and then went to bed. HaHa.

DeleteHi Wanda, just stopping by to say how delightful your blog is. Thanks so much for sharing. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris

Welcome. So glad you stopped by. I will be visiting you soon, and thanks for following. Looks like we might have a lot in common.
DeleteGlad your outage didn't last any longer, Wanda. Isn't it amazing how much we take for granted when we have power and water and sewer that works properly? I realize sometimes how really fortunate I am but other times forget to be thankful....and just accept it as my due. Not good! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteYes, I have a NEW appreciation!!
DeleteIt is horrid when the power goes out, but as you say it is a good reminder not to take it for granted. We nearly lost power for thousands of houses when we had floods earlier in the year, but the army kept sandbagging around the electricity station and saved us, that was a reminder of what nature can do and what we assume will always be there and how it might not. Glad that you are back with power now though and that you made the best of it - sounds quite cosy actually! xx
ReplyDeleteYep, had to throw out the pork chops...but there were only three.
DeleteIt sounds like you made the most of your power outage :) And it's fairly romantic, don't you think! :)
ReplyDeleteI remember several times when our power has gone out due to snowstorms, but thankfully we always had a wood burner stove and we could cook on it which helped.
So glad your power came back on! Hugs to you, sweet Wanda!
HaHa...If you had seen me and my dearest both sitting with "head sets" on listening to the ball game, me knitting...it didn't look so romantic. Perhaps if the dinner had been done...we could have eaten by candlelight. Next time....
DeleteWe don't realize how much we depend on electric until it's out. We go into a room and auto flip the light switch. NOTHING!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week-end. By the way, you now know what you will fix for sipper/dinner, finish the meal from last night.
Patty, had to dump the pork chops...they stayed in a warm oven too long.
DeleteBut a new appreciation for the simple things in life, like flipping a switch and getting light.
You're right, that kind of thing tends to be a rather "powerful" (ha) reminder of things we take for granted!
ReplyDeleteOh dear me, so typical. I really do think think Murphy was perhaps one of the wisest men who ever lived--all his saying bear true all far too often. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, Wanda, I've discovered a problem with reading your posts here--they invariably leave me hungry! Even the though of the (un)cooked meal and the aroma that would have come or , YES, that perfectly healthy scone! ha.
