SCRIBBLE PICNIC ~ FAVORITE FICTION

A new year, and a new determination to take more time with each week's theme.  "Favorite Fiction".  I have read and loved the entire No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.  And who couldn't fall in love with "Precious Ramotswe", A traditional built woman, and the No. 1 Detective.  We all make pictures in our mind of how characters look in books and I had my own imagination of Precious.  Then HBO made series of the books.  The actress portraying Precious did such a good job, I decided that was just what she looked like.

The above portrait in watercolor is from a picture of her I found from the movie series.

The book covers always give us a glimpse of Africa which is the setting for all the books.  Love the culture and the stories so I had to add African Red Bush Tea to my tea collection. (It's what Precious drinks...haha)

This is the first painting in my new Watercolor sketch pad, and will hold my 2018 Scribble Picnic weekly challenges.  Look forward to using some of the new paints and brushes that will come in Michael's generous Give Away that I was so blessed to win.

I'm really anxious to see what Favorite Fiction character is entered by all the other artists.  Join me by clicking on the Scribble Picnic Badge on my sidebar.

If you have never read any of Alexander McCall Smith's books, you should.  He has many others that are excellent too...like the 44 Scotland Street series.

  4. What a wonderful way for you to begin a new sketch book, I like your depiction of the warm hearted Mma. I love these books and read them in order, recently Precious and Grace. The actress was ideal, they should make more.

    1. Oh thank you Alexandra. You comments mean a lot to me as I love your whimsical characters, and how you make them your own. I never tried any of the watercolor pens, but am so comfortable with my old pallet and brushes. But I ready to try something new, and look forward to the paints coming in the Give Away. No rush whatsoever..I'm not going anywhere. Be completely well, the box will come in due time.

  16. I was very tempted to buy the Scotland Street Series, first book, from the desing of it alone, some years ago when perusing at B&N. I loved the movie based off the book, No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, so can imagine the novels were ven better. Yes, it struck me too that the lead role lady was so perfect for the part. Speaking of which, I love your rendition here for both. Wonderful job and what a FABULOUS guest to bring. DEfinitely out of the box as you noted as a heads up on my blog a bit ago. Love that. She would regail us with stories no end.

As for stories of Africa, I get quite a few with my oldest son, Michael, being in The middle of the Kalahari as the only non tribe person for 100's of miles in Botswana with PEace Corps. It's incredible hot there and the air filled with wasps, the ground crawls with bugs etc but he loves the third world adn plans to spend the rest of his life there to some capacity.

Thank you again. Oh, and FYI: with Alex being ill with bronchitis and such, I have not yet had a chance to mail your box so please hold on! I can't wait and will tell you when it;s on its way. Just need to find a a box at the right size for everything. :)

    1. Thanks Michael. How exciting that your son lives in the setting of the stories (or close by). As you mentioned, movies are good, but the books go so much deeper into the characters, their hope and dreams, their struggles, and watching Precious solve the mysteries and so common sense cute and many times she has me laughing out loud.
Wonder if your son has ever tried Red Bush Tea?? The books share many of the things about the land that you mentioned in your comment. Also feel like I've been there.

As I mentioned to Alexandra above..NO RUSH on the box..it will come in due time...and that will be the perfect time. Get Alex well first. Love and Hugs, and looking forward to "Hot Chocolate".

  17. Oh Wanda, I just love this series. I need to get the latest book that just came out. Your depiction of Precious is absolutely perfect. I even used to have some of the Red Bush Tea. It's a bit "weedy" but brewed properly can be tasty.

    1. Thanks Sue. I can't believe how many of us had to try Red Bush tea after reading the series. It's the "romance" of the tea, certainly not the flavor..haha. Yes, weedy is a good way to describe it, or perhaps it just taste like a "bush"..haha. The newest book is really good, as it takes you into more of Precious personal life.
