SISTER WEEKEND

My sweet sister, Donna will turn 80 on September 2nd.  She is all I have left of siblings as we lost our younger brother to cancer last year.

After cancer took our mother in 1991, we decided to have a "Sister Weekend" every year to remember her and have some sister time.  We have had many many wonderful weekends over the years.  But then life got in the way and we skipped a few, and then a few more.

When we were visiting her on our trip up North recently, we made a covenant that we will start that tradition again.   So, come August, I will board the Amtrak Train up North and then we will drive over to the Coast and spend some time together at the Beach.   Shopping, eating, walking, napping, eating, walking, shopping....you get the picture...HaHa.

The older we get the more we realize we need to do those things we put off...you never know what tomorrow will bring.  It doesn't see like it was that long ago that we were girls sharing life and a bedroom.

How nice to have something so special to look forward too.

**the new header is the pool in our complex.

  1. Hi Wanda, You and Donna are just beautiful! So happy you are planning to have this sister time next month. Lots of shopping and eating! lol I have one sister and we, too, shared a room growing up. We have not seen each other in almost 7 years but we do talk daily.
I know you said yesterday that you enjoyed hearing the children's voices as they play in the pool. Thanks for the cute photo!

    1. Looking forward to it. I'm glad she is just 300 miles away. I was thinking about the kids and wanted to put a brighter background on my blog and these colors seem to work good.

  2. Oh splendid idea to start doing the sister times more regularly. Such times require intent and planning. Have lots of fun! My sister and I had monthly sister days last summer and none this. Life! You just never know when an interruption will come along.

    1. If we lived closer we could do those spontaneous things, but we have to plan ahead for these trips. But you are so right...interruptions don't stick to the plan...HaHa

  3. Wanda, So glad you take the time to be with your sister. I used to have sister luncheons , about 4 times a year...then two sisters had to have their schedules worked around...to the point I just quit having them... Now I just do things with one sister at a time. I always say, those that want to be family will try and those that don't, won't. Even begging doesn't help . I wish you a fun time. Loved the previous posts that I have missed. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

    1. I have the same problems trying to have time with each of my daughters...their lives are so busy so we usually wait for Birthdays, or other family events.

    1. The past few years haven't taken their tole on us haven't they Bob? I'm glad my sis is only 300 miles away...Of course if I drive, it's over the grapevine, and my dearest doesn't like me driving along...thus the Amtrak.

  5. Aw - love this photo of you and your Sis!
I don't have a sister but I have many girlfriends and two in particular are like sisters. We are all busy but we try to see each other when possible. I often find that the last-minute gatherings can work better than things planned in advance.
Have fun with her in August. I love train travel!

    1. You can tell from the picture she is a sweetheart. She's the favorite Aunt on all sides of the family. She NEVER forgets a birthday, anniversary or any other important event. Sends cards to everyone.
I love train travel too. Sometimes I read, sometimes I nap, or knit...it will be fun.

  8. How wonderful that you and your sister care enough about each other to do this.

    1. Growing up, because she is 6 years older, we were not very close...I was the little sister getting into her things and embarrassing her in front of her friends...but as adults...we have become like peas and carrots. We care deeply for each other. Partly because together we took care of our mother before her passing.

  9. I love the new header and your sister is just as beautiful as you are. How I would love to have some sister time. I hope when her kids get grown, we'll make some time for each other. I'm usually keeping her kids, 12 and 15. They will be grown before you know it.

  11. I saw this post earlier and wanted to reply - but LIFE gets in my way!!! Good for you and your sister!!! If you don't plan it - you will never DO it!!! You may mean to - but unless it is marked on your calendar - it seldom happens! Deanie and I had a sister trip last February. We have included another sister for THIS February!!! Capture the moment. Say the words. Make the plans. Life is short.......

  13. Sounds like loads of fun getting together often, something of which I keep telling myself to do with a very close friend of mine we adopted each other years ago being she has no blood sisters of her own and only brothers like I do. What better way to travel is on the Train.

    1. Hi Rosy ~ You should plan something with your friend, as we just don't know how life can send us interruptions and we miss out on special times.
Hope you're having a good week.

  14. You and your sister are so pretty. What a great idea. My brother and I have been much better about that getting together than my sister and I. I realize as we get older we may not have many more opportunities to do that. Enjoy!

  16. As we get old and time zips along faster and faster its hard to find time to keep in touch with loved ones and family. I'm sure you will take along the camera for the train and visit.

  17. Awww...that almost makes me tear up. Such a sweet post and picture. I wish my own full blooded sister (only 14 months younger) wanted to do such things but sadly, she cut me off and some other family years ago. I have only sen her 4 times in the last 25 plus years--two of those times were wehn our parents each got remarried (not to each other!).
