A BUSY AND GOOD SATURDAY

You all know my dear friend Elizabeth ~98 years young.  With graduations, doctor appointments and general busyness, I hadn't had a chance to visit her for almost a month.  So today I decided I would just take off and make a day of visiting her and running a few errands on that side of L.A.  (She is such a sweetheart and looked so pretty in her pink blouse)

She has such a good memory and loves to tell me stories.  She's quite the "pack rat" (I say that nicely) so today she share with an invitation dated 1937 in Hungarian.  She explained it was a Hungarian Ball.  That is where she's from.  It listed the menu of stuffed cabbage, and other delicacies.  It was held after the grape harvest and bunches and bunches of grapes were hanging from the ceiling.  Sometime during the ball, the lights were turned off and you could keep as many bunches as you could grab in the dark.  Doesn't that sound like a fun time??

When we lived in Sunland we enjoyed Guido's Combination Pizza almost every Friday night.  I had this idea since I was going right by it on my way home from my visit with Elizabeth to pick up one and surprise my dearest.

It was torture driving 45 minutes with it sitting in the back seat and the aroma kept tickling my nose.   More that once I almost pulled off the road and had a piece.  But I held off, and we enjoyed it so much.  Not much leftover....but then it's been a long long time since we've had Guido's.

How was your Saturday?

CONGRATULATIONS ELIJAH

Congratulations Elijah.

A hug from mom.  Her baby is out of high school.

A hug from dad, our son Myk.

Grandma and Grandpa ~ so very proud.  The ceremony was outdoors in the sun...my dearest's hat sure came in handy.

Myk made roasted corn salsa...so yummy!

Chocolate cake with raspberry filling.  Double Yummy.

Graduating is hard work...just give me five minutes!  HaHa

Just love this shot of Elijah in Grandpa's hat!

He'll be going to college locally in the Nursing Program.
His brother Kaleb, heads back to Illinois in August to finish his last two years, also in the nursing program.

It will sure be nice to have nurses in the family in our old age.

TUESDAY TIDBITS

Oh dear ~~ the Cookie Ministry had to make another change.  You cannot see the little sign on my door knob from the  bottom level.  So kids were coming up and down the stairs looking to see if the sign was out.   OK put on your thinking cap....Yes, lets make a little banner to hang over the side of the ledge on Cookie Day!

Banner is out, and Me and Molly are ready for the kids!

Well to my surprise I saw two little girls driving a spiffy pink car around the playground.  You never know what you'll find here.  HaHa.  Ducks in the swimming pool, and little girls driving a Barbie Car.

Just saved $25 and gave me self a pedicure.  What did I do with those savings...Used some of it for a new pair of flip flops.

Remember that cute valance I bought for the kitchen window.  Well what do you know.... I found a blouse with the same pretty cut outs.  Now I match my curtain when I'm in the kitchen...HaHaHa.

HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A GOOD TUESDAY!

WE WILL REMEMBER!

Buried somewhere in our storage closet on the balcony, I'm sure there are some flags.  But it was just too big a job to take out everything to look for them.

A quick trip to the Dollar Store solved my problem and they came two in a package so the Tree House is an indication of our love and support and thanks to the many men and women who gave so much that we could have the freedom to fly our flag and sing God Bless America.

TAKE YOUR PICK

Southern California has many wonderful things...TRAFFIC is not one of them.  From our home you can take your pick of freeways.  The 605, 210, 10, 60 ~~~ and during commuter hours, you better take a picnic lunch.  We don't often need to be on the freeways at that time, but this morning we did.

We really like the Auto place that has services my car for the past six years, so when it needs a service, we take it back to them.  Our appointment was 10 AM so we left at 9:00.  One good thing, we have the diamond lane, and if there are two or more of us in the car we can use it.  Usually that moves a lot faster than the other lanes.

How is the traffic where you live?

GRANDBOYS AND COOKIE SHORTCUTS

Sunday afternoon we had visitors at the Tree House.  Michel brought the great grandsons,  Matthew and Issac for some fun at the playground and snacks.  They are growing up so fast.  We had a lot of fun playing "Catch me if you Can" and I'm afraid I'm slower than I use to be...I never did catch Matthew.  HaHa.

Because I'm baking so many cookies for my "Cookie Ministry" at the Tree House, I enjoying this SHORTCUT.  After I make a batch of cookie dough,  I roll it into 4 logs, and wrap in plastic wrap.

Then I either freeze or refrigerate and when I'm ready to bake cookies, cut every inch, and place on the cookie sheet. I don't have to mess with making the dough or the clean up.

Years ago my mom had a recipe for "refrigerator cookies" that she rolled into a log and then cut and baked.  I can't find the recipe in my recipes...maybe I'll google it.

THOUGHTS FOR SUNDAY

Today, O Lord ~~~
let me put right before interest;
let me put others before self;

let me put the things of the spirit
before the things of the body;

let me put the attainment of noble ends above the enjoyment of present pleasure.

let me put principle above reputation:  let me put Thee above all else.

Give me a heart like Jesus Christ today ~~ a brave heart, a true heart, a tender heart, a heart with a great room in it, a heart fixed on Thyself; for his name's sake.  Amen

May your Sunday be filled with joy and blessings!

A REALLY GOOD SATURDAY

Pulled Pork and Cold Slaw sandwiches.
 Blueberry Banana Bread...w/drizzle.

 Old Town Monrovia Street Fair.

A movie and enough points to get a free popcorn!

This morning I had an eye to eye encounter with a darling little humming bird.  He came right up on the balcony.  That settled it.  Since I can't have a humming bird feeder...how about a trumpet plant in a pot (This one is called Sun Parasol).  I stopped by the Nursery after the movie, and I hope this entices him back.

And what a nice surprise was waiting in the mailbox for me.  Our cousin in Idaho sent me these Vintage Scatter Pins...She said they had my name all over them.   I guess this is another reminder I need to start painting again.

What a super good Saturday.

A BRIGHT NEW DAY

The Birthday bouquet from a couple of weeks ago started looking very sad, I almost threw it away but notices a few flowers still had life.

I had some little glass vases stored in the book shelf on the balcony so now I can enjoy the last of the bouquet.  A gift that keeps on giving.....

Have a Great Day.... I'm off to meet my new oncologist since we moved.  Routine check up and mammogram.   Six years cancer free....God is good all the time and then some!!

THIS AND THAT

I truly enjoy my morning coffee on the balcony and being entertained by a few of my feathered friends.

The turn out for Zumba at the clubhouse Monday evening was really small.  But our instructor Terra didn't care...we worked out for an hour!  I love that all ages come out and each of us just do what we can.  Movement is good.

The arches and walkway to the clubhouse and the pool area always remind me what a lovely place we have the privilege to live in.

A shot of my Mother's Day Balloon Bouquet.  I hope they last a long time...makes me smile and feel loved every time I walk into the living room.

Hope you're having a good week!

MARBLE, MARBLE ~ WHO'S GOT THE MARBLE.

Do you remember the game "Who's got the marble?"  That was my question on Saturday.  When I ask my daughter what I could bring Sunday to the BBQ she said a "Marble Cake" would be nice.  No problem, I'll pick up a marble cake mix and marble cake it will be.

Not so easy.  I went to Target, NO marble cake mix,  Tried Food 4 Less.  Same story NO marble cake mix.  I decided I wasn't going to drive any further to find a silly cake mix, so bought a chocolate cake mix and a white cake mix. "I'll make my own marble cake."

When I got home, I really didn't want to do all that mixing and measuring to get it just right......so I opted to make a dozen "Jumbo" chocolate cupcakes, and a dozen white.  I frosted the chocolate ones with cookies and cream frosting, and the white with chocolate fudge frosting.

That's my idea of "MARBLE".    They were the perfect dessert after a wonderful Mother's Day Lunch of BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes and roasted corn on the cob.

NOTE:  If you counted the cupcakes and found 2 missing.  Not a problem...someone had to taste them...Yum ~ they passed the taste test.

THREE ROSES FOR MOTHER

Mother's Day ~ The most celebrated holiday.  More flowers, gifts and dinning out are done on Mother's Day than any other holiday in the year.

However, this year I want to share about three mother's and what they gave.

Jocahebed ~The Gift of Moses ~The Law Giver

Exodus 2:1-4 "And a man from the house of Levi went and took a wife, a daughter of Levi,  So she conceived and bore a son.  And when she saw that he was  a beautiful child, she hid him for three months.  But when she could no longer hide him she took an ark of bulrushes, daubed them with asphalt and pitch, put the child inside and laid in the reeds by the river's bank.  And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him."
Jacahebed saved Moses life, and he became the Leader of Israel and the Law Giver.

Hannah ~ The Gift of Samuel ~ The Prophet

I Samuel 1  The Lord had closed Hannah's womb and she had no children.  She went to the temple year after year praying for a child.   The Lord heard her prayer and the Priest Eli told her God had granted her request and she would have a child.  She bore a son and named him Samuel.  When he was weaned, she took him to the temple and prayed this prayer.  'O my Lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord.  For this child I prayed and the Lord granted me my petition.  As long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.  And they worshiped the Lord there.
Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord and be became a great Prophet of Israel.

Mary ~ The Gift of Jesus ~ The Savior

Luke 2:7 "And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger because there was no room in the Inn."
John 19:26-27 "When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, 'Woman, behold your son".  And He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother."
Mary gave human life and love to her son Jesus, and HE is the gift of all GIFTS.
He is the SAVIOR

The Bible is full of wonderful stories of Mothers, but today we focus on these three and the Mother's Day gifts each gave.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

A NEW RUFFLE IN THE KITCHEN

All the windows in the apartment have blinds and a vertical on the slider.  I decided not to hang curtains or drapes when we moved in.

But today, as my dearest and I were doing a little "junking" I saw this cute cotton valence (still in the plastic bag) for $2.99.  I immediately pictured it above the kitchen window and using a pressure rod, didn't have to use any nails or screws.  It just gave the kitchen a new face.  I love it.

Also found a cute skirt and top, and it the sun will shine Mother's Day  (been overcast and chilly) I will be sporting a Spring outfit. Will share a picture later.

Hope you all a Wonderful Mother's Day Weekend.

THROW BACK THURSDAY

This picture of my brother and mother was taken in the 80's.  I miss them both so much.  This is my tribute to my Mom for Mother's Day.  She was an angel wrapped in human skin.  Everyone loved her and she was a wonderful mother to my sister Donna, Hal and me.  My mom lost her battle to cancer in  1991, and my little brother February of last year.

Funny I had forgotten that set of dishes and those drapes and sheer curtains sure tell the date don't they.  Looks like I had baked a cake, so it must have been someones birthday.  Wish I could remember.  That was the parsonage in Hughson.

These Throw Back Thursday's sure bring back memories, don't they?

ODDS AND ENDS

Beautiful pink roses in our granddaughter Monique's yard.

Molly really likes my new Spring sheets!

Breakfast with my daughter Julie at the Old Town Bistro in Monrovia.  The cutest little place ever.

The Eggs Benedict and Monte Cristo Sandwich was delicious.

A new candle from Kirkland Home.   This is my second "Cinnamon Drizzle".   Can't get enough of that wonderful smell.

Julie surprised me at breakfast with a gift for my Birthday.  A "twig" Candle Holder with a battery operated candle that you can set to burn 4 hours at a time.  Nice, now I won't burn down the balcony.  HaHa.  Can't wait till this evening to try it.

This has been the best Birthday weekend ever.  Now back to daily chores, paying bills and doctors appointments.  Life goes on and I love every day of it.

THOUGHTS FOR SUNDAY

When we were children, the monsters of the dark seemed real and fanged, lurking in the hallway just outside our door.  We heard the thunderous footfalls in the gloom.  But they turned out to be only our father who heard us crying and came to comfort us.  We never saw him in the darkness.  But we felt his touch and knew he was there.  The universe is vast and sometimes dark, but we are not alone.   ~~Calvin Miller (1936-)

Proverbs 29:25  "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe."

You , O Lord are my salvation.  Why should I fear those who can only kill the body and after that,  can do no more.  Abraham denied his wife, Saul forfeited his kingdom, and Peter betrayed his Savior.  All these were foolish deeds, provoked by misplaced fear.  But to fear You, my Lord, is the beginning of wisdom.  So I will put my trust in You and I will not be afraid of what anyone can do to me.  I love You.  Amen.

Hope you have a wonderful Sunday, free from fear, and rejoicing in God's love and protection.

(This is the devotional I posted on the Daily Prayer Blog, as I do each week on Sunday.  If you've never read the Prayer Blog, you can click on my sidebar, and each day there is others that post a prayer for that day.)

BIRTHDAY BREAKFAST

Had a wonderful Birthday Breakfast with our son, Myk this morning.

Going to the movies and lunch with my dearest.  Having a very nice Birthday.

I love having a Birthday on May Day...My mom thought it was special and named me Wanda Mae.
